The Cessna 177 (the Cardinal for the Deluxe option) has been developed in the mid 1960s as an all new replacement for the 172 families everywhere.
Announced in late 1967, the new aircraft presented a wide cabin and spacious enough, redness game has riveted the rear high wing which offered good visibility in the towers, a single chip all the tailplane movement, a high level standard equipment and 110 kW (150hp) O-320-E recently installed on the 172 driving a set of ground support. Available in two versions, the 177 standard and Cardinal upspec (wheelspats in all painting, etc..), It entered the market place has listed about 10% more than the current 172 model at the time.
While not a failure, the 177 has failed to attract anywhere near the sales volume of 172 (in its first full year - 1968 - 601 was built, about half the number of 172s manufactured this year) . A perceived failure of the initial model was a lack of power, this has been addressed with 135 kW (180hp) O-360-A powered 177A introduced in late 1968. The increase in engine power and performance has now raised 177 in the more upmarket four-seater niche market between 172 and 182.
The 177B model 1970 has introduced a revised aerodynamic profile, the ends of the conical camber wing, beat a hood and a constant speed propeller. In the top version of the market known as 177B Cardinal Classic has emerged in 1978 with full IFR instrumentation fittings and luxury interiors.
The 177RG was announced in December 1970 and as its name suggests, introduced the retractable landing gear hydraulically triggered over 150 kilowatts (200hp) fuel injected engine IO-360-A and a medium speed constant.
Both the 177B that 177RG remained in production until 1978.
